Coffee World Change Supports Young TIT’s New Parent Empowerment

At Coffee World, we believe that community support is about lifting up every individual, especially those who are striving to build a sustainable future for themselves and their families. This past October, our Coffee World Change initiative has proudly partnered with Young TIT on their newly launched Parent Empowerment Programme in Mathare, Nairobi. This innovative program was created to provide low-income or unemployed parents of Young TIT crew members with access to microfinance support that can fuel their entrepreneurial dreams and help create stable sources of income for their families.

Young TIT’s Parent Empowerment Programme operates on a unique, pay-it-forward model. Parents in need, who have business ideas or small ventures, can apply for funding for essential equipment, inventory, or other tools to help get their business off the ground or grow it further. Each recipient receives a small loan with an informal microfinance agreement to pay back the amount over time, allowing Young TIT to reinvest the funds in empowering more parents, building a cycle of community-driven support. This October month, we are thrilled to share the story of the program’s first sponsored parent, Baba Ochibo.

Baba Ochibo is a dedicated father of six and the sole provider for his family. As a boda boda driver (motorcycle taxi operator), his work is essential to the daily lives of Nairobi’s commuters, but without his own bike, he faced serious challenges making ends meet. Recently unemployed due to the costs of renting a bike, Baba Ochibo saw the opportunity to regain his independence through the Parent Empowerment Programme.

With sponsorship through Coffee World Change, Baba Ochibo was able to purchase a second-hand bike, which he promptly refurbished and got back on the road. He is now back to doing what he does best: providing reliable transport for the local community and earning a steady income to support his family. His earnings have quickly rebounded to £6-£12 a day, of which only £1 is used for repayment—leaving him well-positioned to provide for his children.
