A Breeze of Change: Supporting Girls’ Education in Nigeria This April

At Coffee World Change, our focus has always been East Africa - specifically the communities in Kenya and Tanzania where we’ve built deep, trusting relationships. But every so often, an opportunity arises that reminds us that the need for support knows no borders.

This April, we were honoured to extend our support to Nigeria, partnering with a remarkable non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering young women and girls from vulnerable communities.

Founded by Seyi Oluyole in 2015, Dream Catchers Academy has spent the last decade doing transformative work. The organisation equips young women and girls with education, skills, and a safe haven. But their mission goes beyond typical after-school programmes. Alongside providing educational support to vulnerable communities, the Dream Catchers Academy also houses, educates, and provides a safe home to tens of orphaned and vulnerable young girls.

When we connected with Seyi and her team, we asked a simple question: what do you need right now? The answer was practical and central to education; the classrooms at the academy reach sweltering temperatures during term time. In a country where the heat can be relentless – for 40 girls aged 5 to 15, sitting through lessons in stifling heat made concentration difficult and progress slow.

The solution? Fans and lots of them!

This April, Coffee World Change funded eight wall fans across eight classrooms. It was a straightforward project with a clear goal: bring down the temperature and let the girls focus on what matters most; their education.

The timing worked out perfectly. The fans were installed just before the girls returned to school in early May and the early reports from Seyi and her team have been wonderful.

The classrooms are cooler. The girls are more comfortable. Teachers have noticed improved concentration and energy levels.

We are deeply grateful to Seyi Oluyole and the entire Dream Catchers Academy team for the work they do every single day. And we are proud that Coffee World Change could play a small part in making their classrooms a little more comfortable, and their girls’ futures a little brighter.

Sometimes, change really does come in the form of a cool breeze.

This is what change brews like.
