At Coffee World, we believe education is one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting change. That’s why, through our Coffee World Change initiative, we’re committed to supporting young people in communities where opportunities are scarce but dreams are abundant. This January, we’re proud to share a story of resilience, determination, and the incredible power of community as we helped two young members of Young Teens in Talent (Young TIT) return to school.
One of the boys faced a heartbreaking situation. After being abandoned by his mother, he was left in the care of programme manager, Moses, as his remaining younger sister was unable to support him.
The second boy’s school had closed down after it was deemed unsafe, being too close to a river. His mother, having been let go from her job in December, was unable to afford the costs of enrolling him at a new school. These costs included admin fees, a new uniform, and other essentials. Determined to get back to class, he took action and wrote Coffee World Change a heartfelt letter asking for assistance. It was a powerful letter we couldn’t ignore.
Importance of education
Understanding how much education means to these boys and their families, Coffee World Change stepped in to cover the school fees, admin costs, and other expenses for both boys. Moses, Young TIT’s dedicated leader, wasted no time. He quickly sourced school uniforms from local second-hand mitumba sellers, gathered all the necessary stationery, and ensured the boys were registered at their new schools.
Within just a few days, both boys were back in class, ready to continue their education and chase their dreams. They’ve already made up for lost time and are focused on their studies, determined to use education as a path to uplift their families and communities.
