Stovetop (Moka Pot) Brew Guide

Equipment and Ingredients

  • Moka pot (also known as a stovetop espresso maker)
  • Coffee beans (freshly roasted)
  • Grinder
  • Stove or heat source
  • Spoon
  • Water (filtered)
  • Mug or Cup

1. Preparation

  • Ensure all parts of the moka pot (bottom chamber, filter basket, and top chamber) are clean and dry.
  • If using whole beans, grind the coffee to a medium-fine consistency, slightly coarser than espresso but finer than drip coffee.

2. Add Water

  • Fill the bottom chamber with fresh, cold water up to the safety valve. Avoid overfilling, as this can affect the brewing process.

3. Add Coffee

  • Fill the filter basket with the ground coffee. Use a spoon to level the coffee, but do not tamp it down. The basket should be full but not compacted.
  • Ensure the edges of the filter basket are clean and free of coffee grounds to ensure a proper seal.

4. Assemble the Moka Pot

  • Insert the filter basket into the bottom chamber.
  • Screw the top chamber onto the bottom chamber securely but not overly tight. Ensure it is sealed properly to prevent leaks.

5. Heat the Moka Pot

  • Place the moka pot on a stovetop or heat source over medium heat.
  • Keep the lid open to observe the brewing process.
  • As the water in the bottom chamber heats up, pressure will force it through the coffee grounds and up into the top chamber. You’ll hear a gurgling sound as the coffee starts to fill the top chamber.

6. Brewing

  • Once you see the coffee starting to emerge, reduce the heat to low to avoid overheating and burning the coffee.
  • When the top chamber is full of coffee, you’ll hear a hissing sound. This indicates that all the water has been used, and brewing is complete.

7. Serve

  • Remove the moka pot from the heat immediately to prevent the coffee from getting a burnt taste.
  • Stir the coffee in the top chamber with a spoon to mix the different layers for a consistent flavour.
  • Pour the coffee into your mug or cup and enjoy!

Tips for Optimization

Use freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee for the best flavour.

Preheat the water before adding it to the bottom chamber to speed up the brewing process and reduce the risk of burning the coffee.

Experiment with different grind sizes and coffee-to-water ratios to find your preferred taste.

Clean the moka pot thoroughly after each use, removing any coffee grounds and oils to maintain the flavour and longevity of your pot.
