About Brazil Brigadeiro...

Brigadeiro is a single-farm specialty coffee from Santa Caterina in Mantiqueira de Minas, Brazil. Produced by Marco Valério Inácio Silva, this 100% Arabica coffee is the Arara variety, naturally processed and grown at around 1,200 metres above sea level. Since taking full ownership of Santa Caterina in 2010, Marco has steadily invested in the farm, improving its processing facilities and farming practices with a clear focus on producing higher-quality specialty coffee.

In the cup, it's rich and smooth with plenty of natural sweetness, bringing together notes of chocolate, roasted hazelnut and dates. There's a lovely weight to the cup, balanced by enough fruit and acidity to keep it clean and interesting.

Brigadeiro has become an important coffee for us at Coffee World. It's our house coffee at the Coffee World Espresso Bar in Cambridge and a long-standing favourite with many of our wholesale customers. We've worked with this coffee for years and continue to come back to it for the quality and consistency we see from Santa Caterina.

It really shines as an espresso, where its sweetness and body come through beautifully, and the chocolate and roasted hazelnut notes make it particularly good with milk. It's equally at home as a filter, where more of its fruit character and natural sweetness come through.

For us, Brigadeiro shows exactly why provenance matters – a single farm, a single producer and a carefully selected variety, resulting in a coffee with a character we've come to know year after year.

Natercia, Mantiqueira de Minas

Santa Caterina is located in Natercia, within Mantiqueira de Minas, one of Brazil’s renowned specialty coffee-growing regions. The farm covers more than 216 hectares, with elevations ranging from 960 to 1,470 metres above sea level.

Coffee wasn’t always the main focus at Santa Caterina. The property was traditionally centred around cattle farming, but after taking full ownership in 2010, Marco Valério Inácio Silva saw the potential of the farm’s altitude and growing conditions and began putting more focus into producing high-quality specialty coffee.

Since then, Marco has invested heavily in the farm. New drying patios, mechanical dryers, washing and sorting equipment have all been introduced, alongside improvements to pruning, harvesting and post-harvest practices.

These investments have given Marco greater control over quality at every stage, from growing and picking through to the preparation of the finished green coffee.

Today, Santa Caterina grows several varieties, including Arara, Mundo Novo and Catuaí. Our Brigadeiro comes from the Arara variety, grown at around 1,200 metres, and is naturally processed.

That continued investment, along with careful variety selection and greater control over processing, has helped Santa Caterina develop into the specialty coffee farm it is today.
