OCTOBER 2025 Coffee World Change Initiative

October’s Harvest: Channeling Rain into Hope and Stitching New Dreams

At Coffee World Change, we find immense joy in the tangible—the projects you can see and touch that make a daily difference. This October, we’re celebrating the completion of two such initiatives that are empowering our partner communities in Tanzania and Kenya, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and resilience.

Transforming a Threat into a Resource in Mwanza

Our visit to the Tawfiq Orphanage in Mwanza this September brought the reality of the East African rainy season into sharp focus. For Mama Shakira and the children, the heavy rains are more than an inconvenience; they are a direct threat to the very walls that shelter them.

The heart of the issue is the orphanage’s perimeter wall. This is not just a boundary; it’s a crucial structural support for many of the interior buildings where the children live and sleep. For years, relentless downpours have been eroding its foundation, washing away the soil and weakening its stability. This has led to sink holes within the property and has caused damage to the perimeter walls foundation. This is why, since early 2024, Coffee World Change has silently been committed to a long-term project to rebuild and reinforce this vital structure. Although still on-going, through monthly funding, it was re-assuring to see progress made during our visit. Keep an eye on our blog to see when this project is finally concluded!

To complement this vital structural work, we celebrated the completion of a new guttering system for the orphanages main house this October. Before the gutters were installed, rainwater would pour directly off the roof, saturating the external walls of the main house. This constant dampness was seeping inside, leading to persistent mould on the interior walls—a problem that no amount of paint could ever permanently fix. Now, rain water is channelled into a large water tank providing surplus for washing and cleaning and reducing the orphanages water bills, all while keeping the walls dry.

Stitching Confidence, One Seam at a Time in Mombasa

From managing water to mastering a craft, our second October celebration takes us to the Island Muslim Girls Orphanage in Mombasa. Here, the spirit of self-sufficiency is woven into everything they do. Their tailoring program is a beacon of hope, where the girls learn to create their own clothes and generate a small income for the orphanage.

Their dream is to train 5-10 of their older girls to become professional tailors, capable of making school uniforms for the wider community. But big dreams need the right tools, and they were limited by only a few working sewing machines – something we also witnessed first-hand during our visit there this past September.

This October, Coffee World Change was thrilled to celebrate the purchase of a brand-new, industrial sewing machine that has already been put to use. This powerful new tool is more than just metal and thread; it will allow more girls to learn a valuable trade, accelerate their production, and stitch a brighter, more independent future for the entire orphanage.

This is the essence of Coffee World Change: funding the foundational projects that allow hope and talent to flourish. We are so proud to share these successes with you.

This is what change brews like.
