March 2025 Coffee World Change Initiative – Brewing Change: How Your Coffee Helped Build a Kitchen for Island Muslim Girls Orphanage

This past March, thanks to your support, we’re proud to share how our collective love for coffee is helping transform lives at the Island Muslim Girls Orphanage in Mombasa, Kenya.
A Kitchen Full of Hope
For the girls at the orphanage’s second site in Mtwapa, a safe and functional kitchen isn’t just a convenience—it’s a lifeline. Before, cooking meals for dozens of girls was a daily struggle, with a majority of the cooking being done outdoors with small metal cookers (called Jikos) and was a highly laborious process, impacted by the weather. But now, thanks to Coffee World Change, construction is well underway on a brand-new kitchen that will provide nutritious meals in a safer, more sustainable environment.
What’s Been Achieved So Far?
Your coffee purchases have directly contributed to:
✔ A sturdy concrete and stone oven – mirroring what was built at Young Teens In Talend in Nairobi that we also funded, back in August 2024. The new oven ensures reliable cooking for large-scale meal prep.
✔ Plumbing and electrics – bringing running water and safe electrical fittings to the space.
✔ Structural progress – laying the foundation for a kitchen that will serve generations of girls.
But the work isn’t done yet. The kitchen still needs final touches like paint and countertops, and we’re committed to seeing this project through to completion. Every bag of coffee you buy gets us closer to that goal.
